We Remember: Coach Duncan

Several of our classmates are on Facebook, and this week we got into a fun, rambling conversation about some of our CHS teachers. We’ve broken up that conversation by teacher to share with you. (Next up: Coach Anderson.)

If you’d like to share a remembrance about one of our teachers, or a funny story from 1974 through 1977, or any CHS-related topic (we've drifted into music now), leave it in the comments section or e-mail us. And if you’re curious about Facebook, sign up and come find us!

I teach 8th grade (Lord help me) here in Macon, GA and have taught now for the last 20 years. Do you remember Coach Duncan who taught us math? The good ol days at Campbell High.

Sam Chapman
Who could forget Coach Duncan?

Beth Coffey
I loved Coach Duncan! Our class was overcrowded our freshman year, so he let Holly Hubbell and me sit on the floor for several weeks. Didn't learn a thing about math, but I like to think I developed some writing skills while Holly and I scribbled notes to one another.

Chris Ortiz
Wow! Coach Duncan. He was something else wasn't he?

Mark Harris
Speaking of Coach Duncan, he was one of only two teachers to toss me out of a class. Larry Marks sat beside me and kept pestering me. I finally had enough and told him to shut up. Of course I was the one who was speaking when Coach snapped his head back to see what the ongoing noise was about. Even so, I still liked him. He was just a nice guy, and a decent teacher.

Beth Coffey
Damn. I missed all the fun classes. I can't remember anyone getting thrown out of a class. Maybe I was daydreaming.

Janet Barentine
Coach Duncan kept me for chewing gum one afternoon. Sorry dawg as soon as the last bus was gone he looked at me and said "OK, Ms Barentine you can go now.” Wish I had more classes with Mark though. He sounds like he was the life of the party.

I had Coach Duncan my freshman year i was sitting in his class mindinging my own business because i was a model student never talking or cracking jokes. I had shared a brief story with one of my fellow classmates when Coach Duncan wheeled around from the chalkboard chalk flying everywhere. He was using crutches at the time and scooted back into the middle of class to see what was going on kinda acting crazy go figure. We all shut up and he picked on this guy who was a senior in freshman math the guy who i have no idea some something really smartass to CD and CD went nuts booting the guy to see Coach Lattanzi i dont think we ever saw him again. After that day i waited and told my jokes in other classes. -- Garry Harvil

I remember the day Coach Duncan walked into algebra class with a book on soccer and announced he was going to be the head soccer coach. When he started as coach he knew nothing about the game. Being the anti-establishment kid I was, this was just another way I figured the administration was out of touch with us. CD admitted he didn't know anything about soccer but would learn. I liked him. He could barely walk, much less run but he gave it his all. And I think he was the only teacher able to get me to learn any algebra. I remember him having a good sense of humor also.

I remember that Coach D. was in charge of the janitorial staff after school and he had a large set of keys attached to his belt. He also walked with a slight limp so you could hear him coming down the hall. The keys served as an early warning system for the entire class.

Coach Duncan was one of the good guys. Along with Mr. Sheffield, Ms. Cheek, Coach Weathers, and some others, they had much to do with my decision, at age 40, to become a high school teacher. I now teach computer classes (web page development, databases and SQL, Microsoft Office, etc) at one of the largest high schools in SC.

What about Coach Fuder? I wore a very sheer navy blue lace blouse to school and Coach Fuder made me model it for the class. I didn't need any help turning red as a beet !!
